I just thought I’d mention the reasons for moving from ZenFolio to hosting my own site which will be waaaay more work. Basically, it came down to ease of use both for me and my customers. ZenFolio’s backend is great, but I got the feeling that they were more focused on products than on usability.
First, as a photographer, I want to express my personality, my way of seeing things. Obviously, with a template-based hosting solution, I’m limited. But, Zenfolio provided only 5 or 6 template options, none of which had any great flow or style. They have finally added ”site customization” to their work list, but there’s no telling when this will be completed or what options will be available.
Second, setting up products and price lists is a hassle. They have tons of options, which is great, but my photography is simple and what I have to offer is simple, so the options that they have are too much for my style. Also, because of the huge selection, ordering is extremely cumbersome.
Third, it just felt limited, like I was trapped in a box. It’s hard to quantify this, but I hated logging in and seeing an outdated-looking website and admin panel and using extremely simple template options to customize my site.
So, I started looking and decided that it would be better to use a WordPress blog with a shopping cart. In a future post, I’ll go over the options that I looked at and my reasons for going this route, but I just wanted to get something out there so you understand a bit of my reasoning. Of course, it’s after midnight so who knows if I’m even sounding reasonable.
Anyways, thanks for reading.
